Sun, shadow & solar analysis

Sun and shadow analysis for any site

Where the sun comes from, which facades it reaches, how long the shadows of the neighbouring buildings are, and how much solar energy the site receives over the year. MapToNap computes it for the exact latitude of your site and draws it over the real buildings around it.

What you can make

The drawings, and what each one shows

Sun path diagram (Pro)

Solstice and equinox arcs with hours, drawn on the site plan for its latitude, with the orientation of the site.

A day of shadows (Max, Deep Analysis)

24 hours of real sun and shadows from the surrounding buildings, plus a sun-hours map of the site.

Sun & wind axonometric (Pro)

Solstice sun paths, the sunlit facades and the prevailing winds over the 3D context.

Solar radiation (Pro)

Monthly shortwave solar radiation on the ground (MJ/m² per day) from NASA POWER, averaged over 2014–2023.

Four seasons at 2 pm (Max)

A simplified feels-like map in sun, shade and wind for each season, marked as an estimate, not a comfort model.

Same style as the rest of the set

Every sun drawing uses the same graphic language as the other site analysis sheets, so the board reads as one.

Guide

How to do a sun and shadow analysis of a site

  1. Start from the latitude. At solar noon the sun stands 90° − latitude above the horizon at the equinoxes, and 23.44° higher or lower at the solstices. North of the tropics it is due south at noon; south of them, due north.
  2. Draw the extreme days. The summer and winter solstices and the equinox give the full range of sun directions and heights. Mark sunrise and sunset azimuths: they swing towards the pole in summer and towards the equator in winter.
  3. Add the real neighbours. Shadows depend on the buildings around the site. Winter shadows are the long ones; check which facades and open spaces lose direct sun from late autumn to early spring.
  4. Quantify, then decide. Sun-hours on the ground and solar radiation per month turn the drawing into arguments: where to put the garden, which facades get shading, where photovoltaics make sense.
  5. Show it clearly. North arrow, scale, the three sun paths with hours, shadows of the critical day, and the data source. Keep one sun drawing per message.
Frequently asked questions

Before you start

What is a sun path diagram?

A sun path diagram shows the path of the sun across the sky for a given latitude, usually for the solstices and the equinox, with the hours marked. Drawn over a site plan, it shows from which directions and at what height the sun reaches the site.

How do I find the shadows on my site?

You need the sun position for the date and time and the heights of the buildings around the site. MapToNap takes both, from the latitude and from OpenStreetMap building heights, and draws the shadows for a full day in Deep Analysis, or the sunlit facades in the sun and wind axonometric.

Where does the solar radiation data come from?

From NASA POWER, a global dataset of daily solar radiation and weather from 2014 to 2023, averaged by month for the coordinates of your site. It suits site analysis; for engineering-grade daylight certification use dedicated simulation software.

Does it work in the southern hemisphere?

Yes. Sun paths are computed for any latitude, so the drawings are correct in Sydney, São Paulo or Cape Town as well as in Europe or North America.

Is it free?

You can try MapToNap free: four 2D drawings (roads, land use, green and water, urban fabric) and one 3D drawing, with a watermark and no sign-up. Without the watermark and with all 68 analyses there are one-time passes: Pro €7.99 or Max €12.99 for 30 days, or a year of Max for €49. Nothing renews automatically.

Do I need to install anything? Does it work on a phone?

No installation and no setup. MapToNap runs in the browser on any computer, tablet or phone, iPhone or Android: open maptonap.com/app, type an address and press Generate. 3D drawings and simulations run smoothest on a computer.
